1. When I initially came to Japan from America, I had never taught before and wasn’t sure what to expect. I soon came to find that while it can be very tiring, the positives far outweigh the negatives. Every day is different and exciting, and the kids, getting to know them, seeing all their various personalities bloom, really make it worth it.
2. There are many things that shape my teaching, but I would say my overall motto is: Be your own person. I apply this in two ways: one is to me as a teacher. It’s so easy to compare yourself to others and while being open to learning is important, it’s essential that you find your own voice and style in order to best connect with your students. The second way I apply this motto is to my students. Children often have individual learning styles and different timing at which they develop, and I think it’s important for the teacher to respect and embrace those things so students feel comfortable expressing themselves and their creativity.
3. In order to set myself up for success, I always do my best to prepare for lessons and iron out all the details beforehand. In this way, I can really devote my full attention to the students. That being said, surprises do happen, so having a flexible, adaptable attitude and a sense of humor really helps! I also try to keep up with new teaching methods and am constantly on the lookout for innovative and creative ideas to use in the classroom and get kids excited.
4. It’s a bit cliché, but listening to myself and following my heart has taken me to many interesting places and has given me many unforgettable experiences, so I would recommend others do the same, as much as possible!
5. For me, one of the best things about this job is seeing my students’ excitement over their improvements, whether it’s passing a test or simply finding that they’re able to communicate more in English. As many students have been at MIRAI since they were young, it’s also great to watch them grow up, to see them go from a shy kindergartner to a smart, confident elementary school student. It’s truly wonderful to be a part of that process!
6. I have many hobbies and interests which means I’m rarely bored! I particularly enjoy sports and love being outside hiking, snowboarding, or running. I also love traveling and going out with friends to find new restaurants and cafes.
7. I’m a great listener and really try to look at both sides of a situation. I’m adaptable and enjoy a good challenge. Integrity is an important value to me, and I always try to do my best. I look forward to continuing to use these qualities to make MIRAI a great place to learn!
